EMMITSBURG, MDThirteen different players scored as Virginia posted a 20-2 win over Mount St. Mary’s on a nice, sunny day at the Waldron Family Stadium in the Cavaliers’ first trip to Emmitsburg.
Garrett Billings led Virginia’s offense with four goals and two assists as the second-ranked Cavaliers improve to 7-0. The Mountaineers fall to 0-4 this season.
Thirteen different Cavaliers scored in the game as all 38 players in uniform saw action.
The teams traded possessions early on before Danny Glading scored on a wraparound at the 11:06 mark to put the visiting Cavaliers on the board first. Brian Carroll scored his only goal of the game on extra man two-and-a-half minutes later as Virginia moved ahead 2-0. Drew Garrison and Billings scored 21 seconds apart midway through the quarter to extend the Cavaliers’ lead to 4-0.
Dan Mohr’s extra-man goal put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard at the 3:14 mark of the first quarter. His seventh goal of the season would be his team’s last for more than 42 minutes.
Gavin Gill and Rhamel Bratton tallied in the final three minutes of the quarter as Virginia outshot Mount St. Mary’s 20-4 in the quarter.
The Cavaliers outscored the Mountaineers 5-0 in the second quarter to take an 11-1 lead at halftime. Billings scored twice, while Peter Lamade, Jack Riley and Ben Rubeor also found the back of the net.
Adam Ghitelman started in goal for Virginia and made five saves in the first half before being replaced by Bud Petit to start the third quarter. Petit went the whole way in the third quarter and made one save but wasn’t tested.
The third quarter was much the same for UVa as seven different players scored. All nine of Virginia’s second half goals were scored by different players.
Virginia had a huge advantage in shots65 to 14and controlled the faceoff X by winning 18 of 26 draws.
The Cavaliers play their third road game in a row Saturday against Towson in a game that faces off at 3:30 p.m.
