CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday night as the Cavaliers (6-4) host the Cleveland State Vikings (3-7) in a mid-week tussle at Klöckner Stadium. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. UVA is ranked No. 14 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverick media poll.
Virginia and Cleveland State are meeting for the first time in series history. The 2017 season marks the inaugural men’s lacrosse campaign for Cleveland State. The last time UVA played an opponent that was in its inaugural season was 2014 when the Cavaliers were the first-ever opponent for in-state foe Richmond. UVA won, 13-12. UVA is 11-1 all-time against opponents from the state of Ohio, which includes 6-1 against Ohio State, 4-0 against Denison and 1-0 against Ohio Wesleyan.
Michael Kraus leads UVA with 25 goals and 45 points. Zed Williams has the team lead with 22 assists and is No. 2 with 41 points. Dox Aitken and Mike D’Amario are tied for third on the points ledger as each player has 25 goals and eight assists for 33 points. Goalie Griffin Thompson is saving 44.9 percent of shots he is seeing in the cage and posting a 12.99 goals against average.
Cleveland State head coach is Dylan Sheridan and his roster features 35 freshmen out of 37 student-athletes in his first-year program. Sheridan has coached against UVA before when he was an assistant coach for Bill Tierney at Denver and the Cavaliers topped the Pioneers, 14-8, in the 2011 NCAA semifinal round. Jake Lewis leads the Vikings with 12 goals, 10 assists and 22 points. Tristen Copeland is second on the team with 11 goals, eight assists and 19 points. Rounding out the top Cleveland State scorers is Jack Frickleton, who has nine goals and seven assists for 16 points. Goalie Caleb Espinoza is saving 49.4 percent of shots he is seeing and posting a 13.69 goals against average.
UVA returns to ACC play on Sunday against No. 20 North Carolina when the Tar Heels come to Klöckner Stadium. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPNU.

Reserved seats for men's home games are on sale for $10. Single-game general admission adult tickets for men's home games are $8, while youth (18 and under), seniors (60 and over), and UVA faculty and staff tickets are $6 each. General admission tickets for groups of 20 or more are priced at $4.
