Starsia Announces 2015 Recruiting Class

Dom Starsia inks 12 student-athletes for the 2015-16 academic year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia men's lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia announced the signing of 12 student-athletes for the 2015-16 academic year.

Joining the Cavaliers next fall are Zach Ambrosino (Dover, Mass.), Ryan Conrad (Timonium, Md.), Theo Dol (Georgetown, Ontario), Matt Dziama (Wellesley, Mass.), Mike Herring (Dedham, Mass.), Tyler Kellogg (Pawling, N.Y.), Ryan Lamb (Burke, Va.), Pat LeMoine (Webster, N.Y.), Phil Poquie (Philadelphia, Pa.), David Smith (Medford, N.J.), Nick Wood (Aurora, Ill.) and Lazare Zoungrana (New Rochelle, N.Y.).

"It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Class of 2019 to fans of Virginia Lacrosse," said Starsia. "It has been a great joy to get to know these young men and they reflect the athleticism and diversity that has begun to distinguish our game."

Ambrosino is a 6-foot, 185-pound defensemen from Dover, Mass. He is a 2015 Under Armour All-American and will play in the 10th-annual Under Armour All-America game on July 3 at Towson's Johnny Unitas Stadium. He is 2013, 2014 and 2015 Under Armour All-Star out of the Taft School. He also wrestled at the Taft School. Current Cavaliers Tyler Breen, Jeff Kratky and Will Sipperly all attended Taft. Ambrosino also played football and was on the wrestling team.

Conrad is a 6-foot, 180-pound midfielder from Timonium, Md. He is a 2015 Under Armour All-American and will play in the 10th-annual Under Armour All-America game. A first-team All-MIAA player, Conrad was a 2013 MIAA champion at Loyola-Blakefield. He was also a 2013, 2014 and 2015 Under Armour All-Star. Conrad was named the 2014 Towson Times Player of the Year. Entered the 2015 season as Inside Lacrosse's No. 1 rated senior after scoring 33 goals, 22 assists and 68 ground balls for Loyola-Blakefield, the same high school alma mater as former UVa All-American and Tewaaraton Trophy winner Steele Stanwick. Conrad also played basketball and soccer at Loyola-Blakefield. He helped Loyola-Blakefield win the MIAA soccer championship in 2014 after scoring the game's only two goals in a 2-0 upset win over McDonogh, which was previously undefeated and No. 1 in the nation.


 

 

Dol is a 6-foot, 185-pound defenseman from Georgetown, Ontario. He attended Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut. Dol is a captain for Avon Old Farms in 2015 and also plays soccer and hockey. Dol was high school teammates with fellow UVa signee Mike Herring.

Dziama is a 6-foot, 180-pound midfielder from Wellesley, Mass. Dziama was a 2014 All-American at Wellesley High School. He finished 2014 with 42 goals, 14 assists and 96 ground balls. Presently Dziama attends Deerfield Academy. Dziama was a 2014 first-team All-Scholastic performer at Wellesley. He also played football and earned all-league honors as a wide receiver.

Herring is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound attackman from Dedham, Mass. Herring scored 31 goals and had 47 assists at Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut in 2014. Herring was a 2013 and 2014 Under Armour All-Star and is a team captain in 2015. He also played football and basketball at Avon Old Farms. Herring was lacrosse teammates with fellow UVa signee Theo Dol.

Kellogg is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound attackman from Pawling, N.Y. Kellogg is a 2013 Under Armour All-Star out of Trinity Pawling School where he also played football, squash and hockey.

Lamb is a 6-foot-2, 200-pound midfielder from Burke, Va. Lamb was a 2014 first-team All-VISAA and WCAC performer at Paul VI Catholic High School. In 2014 Lamb was as a second-team All-Met selection in lacrosse.

LeMoine is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound midfielder from Webster, N.Y. Lemoine was a 2014 all-county player out of Webster Thomas High School.

Poquie is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound midfielder from Philadelphia, Pa. Poquie played lacrosse and football at the Haverford School. He scored 11 goals and dished out seven assists in 2014. Poquie earned Maverik Showtime All-Star honors and was a Monroe County All-League honorable mention honoree. He was a 2014 All-Inter-AC running back where he averaged 10 yards per carry. Attends the same high school as current Cavalier Will McNamara and former UVa captain John Haldy.

Smith is a 5-foot-9, 175-pound midfielder from Medford, N.J. Smith was a 2014 All-American out of Shawnee High School. In 2013 Smith broke the Shawnee record for ground balls in a season (236), previously owned by former UVa All-American Chris LaPierre. He won faceoffs at an 82 percent clip in 2014. Smith also played cornerback on the football team.

Wood is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound attackman from Aurora, Ill. Wood is the ILYLA all-time points leader out of Metea Valley High School. He prepped a year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Wood was an Under Armour Underclass All-American and is the younger brother of current Cavalier Zach Wood.

Zoungrana is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound defenseman from New Rochelle, N.Y. Zoungara is a 2014 Under Armour All-Star from Brunswick School in Greenwich, Conn., where he helped the Bruins to a co-New England West I championship. Zoungrana started playing lacrosse at age 13. He also played football at Brunswick and is a black belt in karate.

"The future of Virginia Lacrosse is in good hands," said Starsia. "There is a young man from Illinois whose older brother is a present member of our program, a Canadian defenseman, a middie who broke Chris LaPierre's (former UVa All-American) groundball record at Shawnee High School as a junior, a young man with an Iroquois background, the No. 1 rated recruit in Inside Lacrosse's incoming class and two young men whose families emigrated from West Africa to escape civil war. Some of these players will make an early contribution in 2016 and there will clearly be spirited competition at key positions."
