CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia senior midfielder Chris LaPierre is one of eight current collegians participating this weekend in a 98-player tryout for the United States men's national team that will compete in the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse World Championship. The championships will be held next July at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
The tryout takes place at Goucher College in Baltimore, Friday though Sunday. The 40-man roster will be announced on Tuesday.
LaPierre (Medford, N.J.) returns to UVa in 2014 after receiving a medical hardship for 2013. He is a two-time USILA All-American and a two-time All-ACC performer. Collegians joining LaPierre at the tryout are: Thomas Schreiber (Princeton), John LoCascio (Villanova), Joe Fletcher (Loyola), Austin Kaut (Penn State), Brendan Fowler (Duke) and Kevin Massa (Bryant). The eighth collegian invited was Jordan Wolfe of Duke, but he pulled out of the tryout beforehand with an injury.
Six former Cavaliers are also in Baltimore at the tryout. Attackman Chris Bocklet, goalie Adam Ghitelman, defensemen Matt Lovejoy, attackman Ben Rubeor, attackman Steele Stanwick and goalie Kip Turner join LaPierre this weekend.
There have been 21 former Cavaliers that have represented the United States in the FIL World Championship since 1967. Most recently, midfielder Kyle Dixon helped lead UVa to the gold medal in 2010.
