Virginia is 17-3 all-time against American. The programs last played on Oct. 28, 2011, in Charlottesville, with the Cavaliers scoring a 2-0 win over the Eagles. UVA has won 11 straight matches against American, dating to a 2-1 Eagles win on Oct. 9, 1998, in Charlottesville.
Capping the Non-Conference Slate
Virginia finishes the non-conference portion of its regular-season schedule Tuesday and has just four regular-season matches remaining. This also is UVA’s final midweek game of the regular season. The Cavaliers are looking to finish an unbeaten non-conference slate. UVA holds a 5-0-1 record outside of league play.
UVA Comes Up Short at BC, 2-1
Virginia’s late rally fell short in a 2-1 defeat at Boston College Friday in Newton, Mass. UVA fell into a 2-0 hole before scoring in the 86th minute and nearly recording the equalizer in the final minute. Simon Enstrom scored both goals for Boston College, while Jean-Christophe Koffi recorded his second goal of the season for the Cavaliers.
Virginia out-shot BC 12-4, including a 10-2 edge while dominating the possession battle in the second half. UVA also took 13 corner kicks, including 10 in the second half. Virginia broke through in the 86th minute on a scramble in the box, with Koffi finishing for his second goal of the season. Wesley Suggs and Patrick Foss each assisted on the score, with Foss recording his fourth assist of the week.
Salandy-Defour Returns to Mix
Marcus Salandy-Defour has started the last three UVA games at midfield. It marks his first game action since Dec. 13, 2013, in the College Cup against Maryland. He has made an immediate impact, scoring goals in UVA’s wins over Louisville and Portland. Salandy-Defour missed the 2014 season with a knee injury and the first eight games in 2015 with leg injuries.
Rookies Make Key Contributions
Seven Virginia freshmen have played during UVA’s first 11 matches, while three have earned at least four starts apiece. Edward Opoku has made nine starts at forward, while Malcolm Dixon and Derrick Etienne each have started four matches. Jean-Christophe Koffi has played in 10 matches off the bench. The Cavaliers’ incoming recruiting class was tabbed the No. 2 class nationally coming into the year.
American holds an 8-4-1 record, including a 2-2 mark in the Patriot League, after a 1-0 overtime win over Lafayette Saturday afternoon at home. Dale Ludwig scored the golden goal in the 95th minute. The Eagles are 4-2-1 away from home this year, including a 2-2-1 mark in true road matches. Joel Hart leads the team with five goals, while Liam Robley has recorded a team-best eight assists.
Virginia Remains No. 21 in RPI
Virginia remained at No. 21 in the NCAA’s latest RPI, which was released Monday. American stands at No. 80. The Cavaliers’ remaining matches of the regular season are against Pitt (75), Virginia Tech (45) and North Carolina (2).
Defense Looks to Tighten
Virginia’s defense is looking to bounce back after giving up multiple goals in each of its last four matches. UVA allowed just four goals in its first seven games but has conceded nine times in the last four matches. The Cavaliers had recorded three straight clean sheets prior to the recent stretch.
Up Next: Pitt
Virginia plays host to Pitt at 8 p.m. Friday at Klöckner Stadium. Please note the game time change from the original schedule. The Cavaliers travel to Virginia Tech next Friday (Oct. 23) before returning home to play No. 2 North Carolina on Oct. 30 in the regular-season finale.
