Virginia Trio Gets VaSID All-State Nod

Dec. 13, 2017

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) listed Sergi Nus (Barcelona, Spain), Jeff Caldwell (Todd, N.C.) and Jean-Christophe Koffi (Potomac, Md.) on its annual All-State Teams.

Nus was the lone Cavalier representative on the first team while Caldwell and Koffi earned second team honors. Nus earned back-to-back First Team accolades and Caldwell was recognized by VaSID for the third time in his career.

Nus had a breakout year for Virginia, starting all 21 games at center back in 2017. He contributed a career-high six goals on the offensive end and helped the Cavaliers to six shutouts. He also garnered Second Team All-Region and Third Team All-ACC honors this postseason.

Caldwell was one of four soccer players in the commonwealth this year to become a three-time All-State selection. The senior netminder posted a .80 goals against average, the third lowest in the ACC and was ranked in the top-25 nationally. He collected Second Team All-Region and Second Team All-ACC distinctions in his final season.

Koffi, the first Cavalier since 2014 to earn First Team All-ACC honors, was a Second Team All-State selection for the first time in his career. The midfielder totaled three goals and four assists in 18 games played.

Blount Eager to Assume Larger Role
The job will not be handed to rising sophomore Joey Blount. He'll have to earn it. This is head coach Bronco Mendenhall's program, after all. But after spending the 2017 season as free safety Quin Blanding's understudy, Blount is the leading candidate to take over in the secondary for the University of Virginia's all-time leading tackler.
