HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 14 Virginia men’s squash team (14-7) fell, 7-2, in the opening round of the Hoehn Cup, against No. 11 Western Ontario (9-2) on Friday (Feb. 23) at Trinity’s Kellner Squash Courts in Hartford, Conn.

"We needed to play our best squash to be in with a chance of winning today, and unfortunately we didn't do that," head coach Mark Allen said. "We battled hard and fought all the way to the end of the last match on court. With a tough game now under our belts, I'm expecting us to be that little bit sharper tomorrow and there is plenty for us to still play for this weekend."

The Cavaliers captured wins from freshman Andrew Braff (Locust Valley, N.Y.) in position nine and sophomore Toby Hansford (Darien, Conn.) in position six, respectively. Braff recorded a 12-10, 11-7, 11-9 win against Bryan Hall, while Hansford defeated Adam Vanwyngaarden 5-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6.

Freshman Matthew Katz (Baltimore, Md.) battled through a five-game loss in position seven, falling 5-11, 11-5, 11-1, 5-11, 11-5, to Jackson Kay, while junior Jarett Odrich (Greenwich, Conn.) forced a fourth-game in position three, losing to Akasham Rajaopaul 11-6, 13-11, 9-11, 11-8.
