Men's Tennis Begins Play at UVa Ranked+1 Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's tennis team began play Friday at the UVa Ranked+1 Invitational, its first event of the fall season. The Cavaliers had six singles players advance and three doubles teams reach flight finals on the opening day at the Snyder Tennis Center.

Play began on the day with two rounds of doubles in the four eight-team draws. Virginia had three teams reach flight finals with a pair of wins. In the Red Doubles draw, top-seeded Jarmere Jenkins (College Park. Ga.) and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) reached the final with wins over teams from North Carolina and Louisville. They will play second-seeded Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider of UNC Wilmington in Saturday's final.

In Green Doubles, second-seeded Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawley's Island, S.C.) downed teams from UNCW and Memphis to reach the final. They will play top-seeded David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar of Wake Forest in the final.

Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) reached the Silver Doubles final with 8-4 wins over teams from NC State and VCU. The second-seeded Cavalier duo will play Martin Sayer and Thomas Dehaen of Radford in the final.

Virginia had six players reach the quarterfinals of the four 16-player singles draws. Jenkins, the top seed in Orange Singles, downed Rafael Paez of NC State in three sets. Domijan, the top seed in Blue Singles, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Luiz Elizondo of Louisville in his first round match. Two Cavaliers advanced to the quarterfinals of White Singles, as first-years Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Styslinger each had straight-set wins in their collegiate debuts. Shane blanked Andrew Gores of North Carolina, 6-0, 6-0, and Styslinger topped Cedric De Zutter of Memphis 6-3, 6-3. Virginia also has a pair of quarterfinalists in Gold Singles, where first-years Richmond and Mitchell Polnet (Southampton, Pa.) advanced. Polnet upset fifth-seeded Albert Wagner of Louisville, 6-2, 6-1, while Richmond defeated Stuart Depaolo of North Carolina 7-5, 6-2.

The tournament continues Saturday with the final round of doubles, followed by two rounds of singles. The final round of singles will be on Sunday. Play starts each day at 9 a.m., and admission is free.
