Men's Tennis Has Strong First Day at UVa Ranked+1 Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The reigning NCAA Champion Virginia men's tennis team had a strong first day of the UVa Ranked+1 Invitational, its first home tournament of the fall. The Cavaliers had four singles players and three doubles teams advance to flight semifinals on Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center.

In the White flight of singles, the Cavaliers have two of the four semifinalists. Senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 5 seed in the draw, posted straight-set wins over Stefan Fortmann of Elon and fourth-seeded Francisco Dias of George Washington. He meets top-seed Amerigo Contini of Virginia Tech in the semifinals. Unseeded first-year J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) downed Ismael Dinia of Binghamton and Hunter Koontz of Virginia Tech in straight sets to set up a semifinal matchup with sixth-seeded Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina.

In Blue singles, second-seeded sophomore Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) posted a pair of straight set wins to advance to the semifinals. He defeated Van Domronqsri of Louisville before topping Aws Laaribi of Wake Forest. Shane plays sixth-seeded Nick Horton of NC State in the semifinals.

First-year Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) reached the semifinals of the Orange draw. After a three-set win over Viktor Svensson of George Washington in the first round, he upset the top-seed, 34th-ranked Rafael Aita of UNC Wilmington, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. He plays fourth-seeded Connor Glennon of Memphis in the semifinals.

In the unseeded draw, sophomore Jonathan Cornish (London, England) added a straight-set win over James Coxe of North Carolina.

 

 

All three of Virginia's doubles teams advanced to the semifinals of their respective draws. Second-seeded J.Shane/Corinteli advanced in Black doubles, R.Shane/Cornish won in Red doubles, and Aragone teamed with sophomore Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) to win their opener in Green doubles.

The tournament runs through Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center. Admission is free.
