PRINCETON, N.J. - The Virginia men's tennis team has five players competing at the Farnsworth Invitational, being held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 6-8, at the Lenz Tennis Center in Princeton, N.J.
Junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) redshirt freshman Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) and Kyrylo Tsygura (North Potomac, Md.) all opened the tournament by picking up wins in their respective singles brackets. Lizen downed Middlebury's William de Quant 6-2, 6-2 to advance in the A-singles draw. Tsygura picked up the first victory of his collegiate career by downing Columbia's Michal Rolski, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 also in the A bracket. Alhaqbani defeated Hofstra's Niko Vulinovich 6-3, 6-2 in his match in the B-singles draw.
Freshmen Jefferson Dockter (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jerome Romualdez (Manila, Philippines) also made their collegiate debuts on Friday. Dockter fell 6-1, 6-3 to Lehigh's Jacob Edelchik in the C draw while Romualdez fell 6-2, 6-0 to Jan Dernic of Marist. Dockter fell 7-5, 6-0 to Marist's Justin Chanthalangs in the consolation bracket while Romualdez fell 6-3, 6-3 to Miki Nobuzawa.
In doubles action, Lizen and Alhaqbani, playing in the A-doubles draw, fell 8-5 to a tandem from Drexel. Dockter and Romualdez were edged 8-7 by Andre Xiao and Adam Guo of Middlebury in the C draw.
Consolation doubles matches begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. In singles action, Tsygura will face Temple's Thomas Sevel, Lizen will take on Farleigh Dickinson's Adam Chan and Alhaqbani will play St. John's Alan Nunez at 10:30 a.m. The winners will advance to play again at 2 p.m.
Players from 16 teams will be competing at the tournament with four singles draws of 32 players and two doubles draws of 32 pairs. There will be two rounds of singles and one round of doubles each day. Sunday will have one round of singles and two rounds of doubles.
Bryant, Buffalo, Columbia, Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Hofstra, Lehigh, Marist, Middlebury, Monmouth, NJIT, Princeton, St. John's and Temple will all have players competing in the field.
