PRINCETON, N.J. - The Virginia men's tennis team had five players competing at the Farnsworth Invitational, held Friday through Sunday, Oct. 6-8, at the Lenz Tennis Center in Princeton, N.J.

Junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) won the A-singles draw at the tournament, downing teammate freshman Kyrylo Tsygura (North Potomac, Md.) 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

Lizen went 4-0 in singles this weekend, downing Middlebury's William de Quant (6-2, 6-2), Farleigh Dickinson's Adam Chan (6-0, 6-1) and NJIT's Tomi Antoljak (6-0, 6-1).

Tsygura began his collegiate career with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory over Columbia's Michal Rolski on Friday and also picked up wins over Temple's Thomas Sevel (7-5, 6-3) and Monmouth's Alberto Giuffrida (6-2, 6-0) before falling to Lizen in the final.

Lizen and his doubles partner, redshirt freshman Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.), also won the A-draw consolation doubles bracket on Saturday, rebounding from a first-round 8-5 loss on Friday to Drexel's Bernard Tefel and Sinan Orhon to pick up three wins in the consolation bracket, including an 8-1 victory over Lehigh's George Cooper and Bryant Born in the final.

Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the B singles after defeating Hofstra's Niko Vulinovich 6-3, 6-2 on Friday, but fell 7-5, 6-4 to Alan Nunez of St. John's on Saturday.

Freshmen Jefferson Dockter (Atlanta, Ga.) and Jerome Romualdez (Manila, Philippines) made their collegiate debuts on Friday. Dockter fell 6-1, 6-3 to Lehigh's Jacob Edelchik in the C draw while Romualdez fell 6-2, 6-0 to Jan Dernic of Marist in the D bracket. Dockter fell 7-5, 6-0 to Marist's Justin Chanthalangs in the consolation bracket while Romualdez fell 6-3, 6-3 to Miki Nobuzawa. Dockter and Jerome Romualdez downed Miki Nobuzawa and Youssef Sader of Farleigh Dickinson 8-2 in consolation doubles before getting edged 8-7 in the semifinals by NJIT's George Svensson and Pablo Arrutia.



Players from 16 teams competed at the tournament with four singles draws of 32 players and two doubles draws of 32 pairs. Bryant, Buffalo, Columbia, Drexel, Fairleigh Dickinson, Georgetown, Hofstra, Lehigh, Marist, Middlebury, Monmouth, NJIT, Princeton, St. John's and Temple all had players competing in the field.

Members of the Virginia men's tennis team will be competing at the ITA Regional, being held Oct. 19-23 at Liberty in Lynchburg, Va.
