BLACKSBURG, Va. - Main draw play of singles and doubles at the ITA Atlantic Regional continued Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center on the campus of Virginia Tech. The Virginia men's tennis team had six players advance to the round of 32 of singles and one doubles team advance to the quarterfinals.
Six of Virginia's seven players in action in singles were victorious on Saturday. Top-seeded Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) rolled into the round of 32 of singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jimmy Davis of George Mason. Sophomore Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), the No. 3 seed, downed Jimmy Lange of George Mason 6-2, 6-4. Tenth-seeded Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Daniel O'Connor of George Washington. First-year J.C. Fellow first-year Jordan Daigle (Lafayette, Calif.), who is seeded 17-32, topped Daniel Grauel of Norfolk State, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Jonathan Cornish (London, England) was the only Cavalier to fall on Saturday, suffering a 6-1, 6-1 loss to eighth-seeded Nikita Fomin of George Washington.
In doubles, all three Cavalier teams won their first match of the day, but only one was able to win their second match to advance to the quarterfinals. Third-seeded Justin Shane and Richmond topped Santiago Canete and Nicolas Paulus of Temple 8-4 and Pete Carpenter and Alex Aleman of Duquesne 8-6.
Top-seeded Aragone and Styslinger were upset in the round of 16 by 9-16 seed Jacob and Ethan Dunbar of Richmond, 8-7(3). No. 8 seed Ryan Shane and Daigle lost 8-6 to 9-16 seed Alex Fennell and Russell Bader of Penn State.
The tournament runs through Tuesday in Blacksburg. The singles and doubles champion will automatically qualify for the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships next month at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Blount Eager to Assume Larger RoleFootball3/21/18The job will not be handed to rising sophomore Joey Blount. He'll have to earn it. This is head coach Bronco Mendenhall's program, after all.
