LYNCHBURG, Va. - Virginia men's tennis players junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) and freshman Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) were the runners-up at the ITA Atlantic Regional doubles championship, being held at the Cook Tennis Center and Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.
Lizen and Lord, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, fell to Old Dominion's Aziz Kijametovic and Francois Musitelli, 6-3, 6-4 on Monday (Oct. 23) in the title match. Lizen and Lord opened the tournament with an 8-5 victory over Liberty's Diego Castano and Alexander Poynter in their Round of 32 match on Friday. They picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, edging George Mason's Daniel Gutierrez and Pally Ray 8-7 (6) and then defeating James Madison's Theophile Lauthiez and Paul Mendoza 8-4. The pair downed top-seeded Constant de la Basseteire and Christian Lakoseljac of Penn State 8-5 on Sunday. On Monday, they edged Alberto Caceres and Thomas Sevel on Temple 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 to earn a spot in the final.
Lizen also kept alive his run in the singles tournament, opening the day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Longwood's Amadeo Blasco. Lizen will take on Penn State's Christos Antonopolous on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The winner will face either Virginia Tech's Alexandre Ribeiro or Old Dominion's Aziz Kijametovic in the final, which will be contested on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, Kijametovic and Musitelli automatically earn a spot at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships which will be held November 1-5, 2017, at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Lizen and Lord still have the possibility of earning a wildcard entry into the championship. The event, which serves as the conclusion of the fall collegiate tennis season, will include 128 of the nation's top collegiate singles players (64 men and 64 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men's teams and 32 women's teams). The event replaces the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
