Men's Tennis Doubles Fall in Finals at Penn Classic

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-University of Virginia tennis players Kent Koch and Justin Smith travelled to Philadelphia this weekend for the 1997 Penn Conference Tennis Classic at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

Koch and Smith fell in the finals of the doubles draw to the South Alabama tandem of Nicholas Chisholm and Claes Westlin by the score of 8-4. The Cavaliers began play in impressive fashion Friday afternoon by defeated Dartmouth's second-seeded duo of Gabe Sauerhoff and Rob Simik 8-6.

In singles, the two Cavaliers weren't so fortunate. Smith defeated Penn's Eric Sobotka 6-3, 6-2 in the first round. He lost to Claes Westlin of South Alabama 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the second round.

Koch fell in the first round to Marc Fisicaro of Penn 6-3, 6-3. In the back draw Koch defeated Brad Shafrin of George Washington 6-4, 6-2, before losing to Kyle Kliegerman of Princeton 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
