CHARLOTTESVILLE - The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team opens its 2013 season this week as it hosts action during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Boar's Head Sports Club is one of 15 sites nationwide where four teams will compete to advance to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle.
The Cavaliers welcome No. 63 North Florida, No. 55 Arkansas and No. 62 Georgia State to Charlottesville for action Friday and Saturday. Arkansas plays Georgia State at 2 p.m. Friday before Virginia faces North Florida at 6 p.m. Friday's winners will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday for the trip to Seattle, while the losers meet in a consolation match at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Virginia opens the season ranked No. 1 nationally for the fourth time in the last eight years. The Cavaliers feature three of the top seven players in the ITA Singles Rankings, with junior Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) at No. 3, senior Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) at No. 4, and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) the nation's highest ranked freshman at No. 7. In addition, sophomore Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.), who was ranked No. 1 for most of the 2012 season, returns after missing the fall season due to injury. The Cavaliers also feature three of the top nine teams in the ITA Doubles Rankings.
The Cavaliers are unbeaten in play at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. They advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a pair of home wins during the 2009 and 2011 seasons. Virginia didn't compete in the 2010 and 2012 ITA Kick-Off Weekends because it automatically qualified for National Team Indoors as the host institution.
Admission to all matches Friday and Saturday is free. Due to the construction at the Boar's Head Sports Club, parking near the club is limited. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to allow sufficient time to park.
