Virginia Plays Two Home Matches This Weekend

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men's tennis team (2-2, 0-0 ACC) will play two home dual matches this weekend, facing Eastern Kentucky (2-3, 0-0 OVC) on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. and Kentucky (3-2, 0-0 SEC) on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 12 p.m. Both matches will take place at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club.

Admission is free for all Virginia home tennis matches. Live scoring and streaming video will be available through a link on VirginiaSports.com. Please note that due to construction, parking will be limited at the Boar's Head Sports Club. Fans are encouraged to arrive early.

The Cavaliers are looking to rebound after a pair of losses during ITA Kickoff Weekend. Sophomore Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) returned to action, playing his first collegiate match of the season on Saturday, defeating Texas Tech's Tommy Mylnikov 6-4, 6-3 on court one. Junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) improved to 4-0 in the spring and 16-1 overall with a pair of victories last weekend, including topping Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss who is ranked No. 14 in the ITA singles rankings.

Eastern Kentucky will play a doubleheader in Blacksburg on Friday before heading to Charlottesville for its Saturday match. The Colonels will take on JMU in the morning followed by Virginia Tech in the afternoon. EKU opened the season with back-to-back 7-0 losses to Purdue and Kentucky before sweeping a doubleheader last Saturday against University of the Cumberlands and Northern Kentucky. Ramon van Flymen leads the Colonels with an 11-7 record, including a 3-2 mark at No. 1.

Kentucky dropped its ITA Kickoff Weekend opening round match, 4-2, to host Oklahoma State, but rebounded with a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin in the consolation final. The Wildcats swept a doubleheader on opening day against Northern Kentucky and EKU, but fell 4-3 at Notre Dame on January 21. Kentucky will also play in a doubleheader at home on Friday, hosting Chatanooga and IUPUI, before heading to Charlottesville. The Wildcats have three ranked singles players in No. 34 Ryotaro Matsumura, No. 77 Trey Yates and No. 84 William Bushamuka.

Virginia is 5-0 all-time against Eastern Kentucky and 7-5 against Kentucky, having won the last three meetings.
