The Cavaliers won the doubles point in both matches last weekend against Eastern Kentucky and Kentucky. Redshirt freshman Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) won a pair of matches at No. 1. Freshmen Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) and Kyrylo Tsygura (North Potomac, Md.) won both of their matches on court three by a 6-2 score.
Monmouth has been selected to finish first in the MAAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll after winning back-to-back conference titles. The Hawks return four players from last season, including junior Nicola Pipoli, who was named MAAC Most Outstanding Performer after the MAAC Championship, as well as senior Ale Gomez Estrada, junior Alberto Giuffrida and sophomore Sergio Martinez.
Monmouth played three matches against the Cavaliers last season, two during the regular-season (March 15-16) as well as taking on the Cavaliers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Monmouth also faced Virginia in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Virginia won all four matches by a score of 4-0.
Liberty plays three road matches this weekend. Following Friday's tilt at the Seahawks' UNCW Courts in Wilmington, N.C., Liberty will stay in Wilmington to battle USC Upstate on Saturday morning. The Flames will then make the 330-mile trek north to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the Cavaliers on Sunday. The Flames split a pair of matches, last weekend at Auburn (4-1 loss) and Kennesaw State (4-3 win).
