CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men’s tennis team (6-3, 0-0 ACC) will play a pair of road matches this week, playing at No. 35 Louisville (8-3, 0-0 ACC) on Friday, March 2 at 4 p.m., and at No. 9 Illinois (6-4, 0-0 Big Ten) on Sunday, March 4 at 1 p.m. E.T.
After playing its first nine matches of the spring season on its home courts, Friday’s match at Louisville will be the first road contest for Virginia. The match will also be the conference-opener for both teams.
Virginia comes into the week riding a three-match win streak. The Cavaliers have also won the doubles point in each of the last five matches.
Junior Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) picked up his 20th singles victory of the year last week against Mercer. Lizen is 8-0 in singles this spring and is currently No. 18 in the ITA singles rankings. Freshman Matthew Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) has won his last three matches, including downing Mercer’s Nicolas Guillon 6-0, 6-3 last week at No. 3 singles to improve to 12-7 this year. Freshman Gianni Ross (Chicago, Ill.) has won his last four singles matches and has started his career 7-1. Lizen and Ross are 3-0 together as a doubles team.
Louisville comes into the weekend riding a five-match win streak, most recently defeating Northwestern, 4-2. The doubles team of Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff and Parker Wynn are currently ranked No. 18 after finishing the fall season at No. 6. They have a 19-8 overall record with a 7-3 mark at No. 1. Wynn is 8-0 in singles this spring, playing primarily at No. 2. Federico Gomez is 7-3 this spring, playing on courts three and four.
Illinois will host TCU on Friday before facing the Cavaliers on Sunday. The Illini went on the road to Norman, Okla., to win a pair of matches during ITA Kickoff Weekend to earn a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, where they went 2-1, falling to No. 7 UCLA, but picking up wins over No. 15 Duke and No. 11 Florida. The Illini have faced eight teams ranked in the top-25 this spring.
Virginia is 7-0 all-time against Louisville and 11-4 against Illinois. In Virginia’s last trip to Urbana in 2016, the then-No. 11 Illini upset No. 1 Virginia, 4-3.
Virginia will be on the road again next week, traveling to take on UCF at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., on Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m. The Cavaliers return home on Friday, March 16, hosting Boston College at 3 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
