The undefeated Cavaliers, ranked No. 2 in this week’s ITA team rankings, are coming off a 7-0 victory at NC State on Friday night. Redshirt freshman Aswin Lizen (Douglas, Isle of Man) capped off the sweep by winning his third set at No. 6 singles in a tiebreaker, downing Ivan Saveljic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4).
After dropping the doubles point in the first two matches of the season at Vanderbilt and Kentucky, the Cavaliers have earned the point in each of the last 14 matches.
Senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) are 10-0 this season as a doubles team. Junior Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) and senior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) have also won their last 10 doubles matches.
Virginia has also been dominating singles play. In their last twelve matches, the Cavaliers have only dropped three singles matches.
Kwiatkowski has moved up to a No. 6 ranking in singles after spending the last month ranked at No. 9. Kwiatkowski is 12-1 in dual matches this season and has won his last 12 decisions. Aragone reached the 20-win mark in singles last week and now has a 22-6 record. He has also won his last 12 completed matches.
Duke is coming off a Friday night sweep of its own after downing BC 7-0 in Durham. Freshman Nick Stachowiak clinched his first career match and classmate Spencer Furman won his first career match on court No. 1 to lead the Blue Devils. Furman and Stachowiak also teamed together in doubles, improving to 14-1 this season with a 7-6 (2) victory at the No. 1 court.
Virginia has won 15 matches in a row against Duke and 19 of the last 20. Prior to UVA’s current 19-1 run, the Blue Devils won 22 straight match-ups from 1985-2003. The Cavaliers picked up a 6-1 victory last season in Durham.
Next week, the Cavaliers will travel to Winston-Salem for a Friday, March 31 showdown against No. 1 Wake Forest. The match will stream live online at 4 p.m. on ESPN3 as a USTA College MatchDay production. The Cavaliers will then return home for the first of a string of four-straight home matches when they host Clemson on Sunday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
