May 1, 2013

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia men's tennis team had four individuals selected to compete in the 2013 NCAA Individual Championships, to be held May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Illinois. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.), Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) were selected to the 64-player singles field and the pairs of Jenkins-Styslinger and Domijan-Frank were selected to the 32-team doubles field.

The Cavaliers have two of the top four seeds in the singles championship for the third consecutive year. The two selections to the doubles tournament ties a school record.

Domijan is the No. 2 seed in the singles championship for the second time in his career, matching his seed in the 2011 tournament. This season he is 33-4 in singles, including a 20-3 mark in dual matches. He won the ITA All-American singles title in the fall, marking his second career major singles championship. It is his third appearance in the NCAA Tournament and he reached the round of 16 last year.

Jenkins is seeded No. 3 in this year's field and becomes the third player in school history to make four NCAA Singles Championship appearances, joining Brian Vahaly (1998-2001) and Somdev Devvarman (2005-08). The No. 3 seed is the highest of his career, having been the No. 4 seed last year. This season he has posted a 34-4 singles ranking, highlighted by winning the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor singles title, his first career major championship.

Frank is making his second consecutive appearance in the tournament. After missing the fall due to injury, he posted a 20-1 singles record this spring. Last year, Frank reached the NCAA quarterfinals in his tournament debut.

Styslinger posted a 26-7 singles record during his rookie season and his selection marks the fourth consecutive year Virginia has had a freshman among the field of 64.

In addition, Cavalier first-years Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) are the tournament's No. 8 and No. 9 alternates respectively.

The team of Styslinger and Jenkins is the No. 4 seed in this year's doubles tournament after posting a 19-7 record. It is their first appearance in the tournament as a duo, but it is Jenkins' third consecutive appearance. All three of his selections have come with a different partner, as he competed with Domijan in 2011 and Drew Courtney in 2012.

The duo of Domijan and Frank are also making their NCAA Doubles Championship debut after posting an 18-2 record this spring. It Domijan's second appearance in the event and Frank's first.

Virginia, the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Team Championship, opens play May 10-11 as it hosts first and second action at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers (24-0) meet Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round on May 10 at 1 p.m., with VCU and Minnesota also competing in the Charlottesville Regional.
