CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia men’s tennis team announced that senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) has been named the captain for the 2016 season, as determined by a vote of the team’s players.
“Mac has played an instrumental role in the most successful period in the history of our program,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “What he has accomplished to date includes an NCAA doubles title, an All-American runner-up, an All-American National Championship, three ACC team titles, two NCAA outdoor championships, an ITA National Indoor Championship and we are not done yet. Even with all of this success, Mac is a humble, hard-working, selfless, service-oriented, honest, respectful, consistent, grateful and team-focused person. Mac has done a tremendous job of fine-tuning these skills during his first three years at Virginia. He has embraced the entire experience at UVA and he would like nothing more than to make his last season his best year to date. He was selected by his peers to serve as their team captain and I know he is extremely honored and focused on leading our team in the upcoming season. I am excited for Mac, and the team is as well, for him to take on the role of team captain.”
In his three seasons with Virginia, Styslinger has been ranked as high as No. 1 nationally in doubles and No. 5 in singles, amassing a 74-21 doubles record and a 61-20 singles mark, helping to lead the Cavaliers to NCAA team championships in 2013 and 2015. Styslinger won the NCAA doubles championship his freshman season with partner Jarmere Jenkins and was the ITA All-American doubles championship this fall with junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.). The 2013 ITA Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year has earned ITA All-American honors, All-ACC accolades and was named to the 2015 NCAA All-Tournament team.
Styslinger and his teammates will be competing as individuals at the Charlottesville Men’s Pro Challenger, being held Oct. 31- Nov. 8 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
