CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
Virginia men's tennis players redshirt freshman Ammar Alhaqbani (Alexandria, Va.) and freshman Jerome Romualdez (Manilla, Philippines) competed in the qualifying tournament for the ATP Charlottesville Men's Pro Challenger being held at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Alhaqbani and Romualdez, who were both granted wild cards into the 32-player qualifying tournament, faced one another in the first round on Saturday. Alhaqbani advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Alhaqbani faced Jared Hiltzik in the second round on Sunday afternoon, winning the first set 6-1, but Hiltzik won the second two sets 6-1, 6-3 to eliminate Alhaqbani.
Alhaqbani also partnered with freshman Spencer Bozsik (Charlottesville, Va.) to play in doubles qualifying, but the tandem fell 6-2, 6-1 to Filip Horansky and Nicolaas Scholtz.
Former Virginia men's tennis player Alexander Ritschard is also be competing in the qualifying tournament, winning his opening round match 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 against David Volfson. Ritschard edged top-seeded Nicolaas Scholtz 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) Sunday morning in the second round to advance to Monday's qualifying final. Ritschard came up just short of making the main draw, falling 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3 to Ruan Roelofse in the qualifying final.
The main draw of the Charlottesville Men's Pro Challenger, which benefits Special Olympics of Virginia, runs Oct. 30- Nov. 5. Former Cavaliers Ryan Shane, Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and J.C. Aragone will all be competing in the main draw. Admission is free.
