Cavaliers Advance to Finals of ITA Nationals

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Virginia men’s tennis team continued its strong play at the ITA National Indoor Championships Saturday at The Racquet Club of Columbus. The Cavaliers had singles players advance to the final and consolation final and a team advance to the doubles final.

In doubles, the top ranked team of Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) cruised past Chris Kearney and Taylor Fogelman of North Carolina 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals Saturday. The Cavalier duo, who are undefeated this fall, will play Robert Farah and Kaes Van’t Hof of USC in the final.

In singles, top seeded Devvarman advanced to the championship match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alex Clayton of Stanford. It was Devvarman’s 126th career singles win, giving him sole possession of Virginia’s career singles win record. Devvarman had tied Brian Vahaly’s record of 125 singles wins on Friday. He will meet Ryan Rowe of Illinois for the title on Sunday.

Dominic Inglot (London, England) continued his strong play in the consolation draw with a pair of wins to reach the final. He topped eighth ranked Andre Begemann of Pepperdine 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals to post his second consecutive win over a top ten opponent. Later in the day, he defeated Denes Lukacs of Baylor 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday with the finals of both singles and doubles main draws and consolation draws.
