1997 Season in the Books

The largest Cavalier contingent in school history to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships went to Cedar Falls, Iowa last weekend with a number of accolades already under their belts. Although the men did not come back with any hardware, the season was a huge success. In the 1997 season, the Cavaliers captured the Virginia state crown for the first time in fourteen years and claimed three ACC Champions. In addition, two Cavaliers were named the Outstanding Wrestler at a pair of meets. Along the way, the Cavaliers won their last eight meets of the year, inlcuding wins over nationally-ranked Clarion and Bucknell, and were undefeated in the month of February. Both of these successes were a long time in coming, as only Zach Feldman was alive the last time that Virginia had enjoyed such a win streak. At the ACC Championships, Virginia claimed three ACC titles and four runners-up, the best showing in 21 years.

Individual honors for the Cavaliers included Jim Harshaw, the Outstanding Wrestler at the Virginia State Meet and the champion at 150 at ACC's, the Carolina Open, and the Virginia State meet, Steve Garland, the Outstanding Wrestler at ACC's as well as the 126 champion, Martius Harding, the ACC and Virginia State Champion at 177--both in overtime, and Craig Fenster-maker, State Champ at 190.
