Nine Virginia wrestlers competed in the NCAA Championships Thursday (March 21).
AT VIRGINIA: 2011-12 • Redshirt season • Went 20-5 while competing unattached in open tournaments • Won the Mat Town Open (11/26) and Appalachian Open (1/28) at 174 pounds • Took third place at Edinboro Open (2/11) • Won three matches by fall and three by major decision
2010-11 • Had a strong sophomore season, going 25-9 and wrestling at 174, 184 and 197 pounds • Named to All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll • Ended season with seven straight wins, including six at 197 pounds while filling in for an injured Mike Salopek • Defeated NCAA 184-pound qualifier Diego Bencomo, 7-5 in sudden victory time • Named ACC Wrestler of the Week (2/14) following wins over Bencomo and Appalachian State's Jon Hartley (at 197) • Went 4-0 in ACC duals • Took second at Wolfpack Open (11/14) and third at Mat Town Open (11/27) • Earned team's Hardest Worker Award
2009-10 • Went 13-8 during rookie season while primarily competing in open tournaments • Took fourth place at ESU Open (11/21) • Won all three of his dual matches, with two resulting in bonus points • Earned 19-6 major decision over NC State's Colin Genthert in ACC dual (2/13) • Lost to top-ranked Mack Lewnes of Cornell at Southern Scuffle (12/29) • Named to All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team and ACC Academic Honor Roll
KIRKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL • 2009 Missouri State Champion at 171 pounds • Posted 55-0 record with 35 falls his senior year; fell one win shy of Missouri state record for wins in a season • Senior team captain • 2008 Super 32 Runner-Up • Had 80 career pins in high school • Was crowned Missouri USAW state champion in freestyle and Greco Roman in 2009 • 33-5 record with 23 falls his junior year (171 pounds) • 2007 Outstanding Wrestler at Pat Shaw International Tournament (in Guatemala) • Member of 2007 Athletes in Action team tour to Guatemala • Posted 33-3 record his sophomore year (152 pounds) • 15 and Under Cliff Keen Kickoff Champion in 2005 • 15 and Under Tulsa National Runner-Up in 2005
