CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - With four wrestlers advancing to the semifinal round, the 20th-ranked Virginia wrestling team racked up 70.5 points to claim sixth place after the first day of competition Tuesday at the Southern Scuffle, held at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. Top-ranked Penn State leads the 24-team field with 102 points, followed by No. 3 Minnesota (94), No. 2 Oklahoma State (89.5), No. 8 Cornell (84.5) and No. 6 Missouri (75).
The Scuffle concludes Wednesday with action beginning at 9 a.m. Live video streaming will be available and can be accessed through VirginiaSports.com (subscription required). Live scoring of each match, along with constantly updated brackets, will be available on VirginiaSports.com.
After starting with 18 wrestlers in the tournament, Virginia still has nine wrestlers who remain alive heading into the second day of action. Matt Snyder (R-Sr., Lewistown, Pa.), George DiCamillo (Fr., Highland Heights, Ohio), Jedd Moore (R-Sr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) and Nick Sulzer (R-So., Cleveland, Ohio) all went undefeated Tuesday to reach the semifinals.
"That last round was outstanding for our team," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "Starting with Matt Snyder's pin of a nationally ranked opponent, we really didn't skip a beat. George gutted out a great win and then Jedd and Nick beat two very good wrestlers. It was a good end to a very long day of wrestling."
Jon Fausey (R-Jr., Dalmatia, Pa.), Stephen Doty (R-Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Zach Nye (R-Fr., Enola, Pa.) all remain in contention in their respective consolation brackets, as do 133-pounders Joseph Martinez (So., Platteville, Colo.) and Zach Watson (Fr., Chattanooga, Tenn.), who each are competing unattached.
Ranked eighth nationally at 125 pounds, Snyder dominated Tuesday with a pair of falls and a tech fall as he steamrolled into the semifinals. Following a pin of 13th-ranked Jerome Robinson of Old Dominion in the quarterfinals, Snyder will wrestle Josh Martinez of Air Force Wednesday morning in the semifinals.
DiCamillo, ranked 15th nationally at 133, swept through three matches to reach the semifinals. He cruised through his first two bouts, with a pin of Minnesota's Randy Hanson and a tech fall over Arizona State's Trevor Wilson before squeaking out a 6-5 win over Penn State's Jordan Conaway. DiCamillo will take on fifth-ranked Chris Dardenes of Minnesota in the semifinals.
Ranked 16th in the country at 157, Moore racked up three wins, with a quick pin of Ohio's Spartak Chino and a major decision over Duke's Immanuel Kerr-Brown before grinding out a 7-2 decision against Oklahoma State's Dallas Bailey. He will wrestle Kyle Bradley of Missouri in the semifinals.
Sulzer, ranked No. 7 nationally at 165, scored four straight wins Tuesday, highlighted by an 8-5 decision over 10th-ranked Cody Yohn of Minnesota in the quarterfinals. He will take on three-time national champion Kyle Dake of Cornell in the semifinals.
Ranked 16th nationally at 174, Fausey went 3-1 on the day. He fell in the third round to Missouri's Todd Porter but rebounded to win over Duke's Trey Adamson (9-2) and Chattanooga's Jake Young (12-4) to advance and face Turtogtokh Luvsandorj of The Citadel in his next consolation match.
Doty recorded a pair of wins in his first two bouts, then dropped a 13-4 major decision to top-ranked Ed Ruth of Penn State in the quarters. He will take on Navy's Mason Bailey in his first consolation match.
After dropping his first match, Nye rebounded to win three straight bouts in the consolation bracket to stay alive. In his second consolation match, Nye topped former ACC runner-up Diego Bencomo of Duke, 10-8. He will face Missouri's John Eblen in his next wrestleback match.
Wrestling unattached at 133 pounds, Martinez advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins before suffering an 11-5 setback to No. 5 Chris Dardanes of Minnesota. He will face in Army's Jordan Thome Wednesday in the wrestlebacks.
Also wrestling unattached at 133, Watson fell into the consolation bracket after losing a major decision to No. 8 Jon Morrison of Oklahoma State in the third round, but he bounced back to record a pair of wins to advance to Wednesday. He will wrestle Penn State's Jordan Conaway in his next wrestleback match.
