DALLAS, Texas. - The University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 2003 Lone Star Duals at South Grand Prairie High School. UVa wrestled in a total of four dual matches in the event after facing the #8 Nebraska Cornhuskers, the #18 Northern Iowa Panthers, the Wyoming Cowboys and the Stanford Cardinal. Virginia began competition in the event by facing back-to-back ranked teams. UVa dropped a 34-9 decision to #8 Nebraska in its first dual before falling to #18 Northern Iowa by the score of 25-12 in its second dual match. Virginia then dropped a 31-13 decision to Wyoming in its third dual match before defeating Stanford 28-14 in UVa's final dual to record its first dual match victory of the season.

In UVa's first match with Nebraska, the Cavaliers won two matches in the dual with the #8 ranked Cornhuskers. Virginia's 157-pounder Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) defeated Nebraska's Nate McMillin by the score of 11-4 before UVa's 197-pounder Zach Freday (Akron, Ohio/Hoover) pinned the Cornhuskers' Kyle Gubbles at 4:36 to record all nine of Virginia's points in the match.

In the Cavaliers' dual match with the #18 ranked Panthers, UVa recorded three wins beginning with Virginia's 125-pounder Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) defeating UNI's Nick Voss by the score of 4-0 to give the Cavaliers an early 3-0 lead in the dual. Later in the match, Virginia's Foley defeated Chris Bitetto by the score of 6-3 at 157 and UVa's Freday was awarded a forfeit at 197 to account for all 12 of the Cavaliers' points in the dual match loss to Northern Iowa.

In UVa's match with Wyoming, Sticca gave the Cavaliers another early 3-0 lead after defeating Bryce Leonhardt by the score of 3-2 at 125. Virginia's Foley posted his third consecutive victory in the competition and recorded a 12-2 major decision victory over Patrick Shuler at 157. The Cavaliers' Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) each recorded their first victory of the event. Durkee pulled out a close 3-2 decision over Trevor Murray at 165 and Etu edged Brad Steele by the score of 2-1 in overtime in the heavyweight class.

In Virginia's 28-14 win over Stanford, Sticca gave UVa its third consecutive 3-0 lead in a dual match with a 10-4 victory over Nathan Peterson at 125. UVa's Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) was awarded with a forfeit at 133 to give the Cavaliers a 9-0 lead. The Cardinal won three consecutive matches to take a 14-9 lead before Durkee posted the first of five consecutive Virginia wins to close out the match starting with his 11-3 major decision victory at 165 over John Garfinkel to pull UVa within one point of Stanford at 14-13. The Cavaliers took the lead for good when Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) posted a 3-1 decision over Harold Penson at 174 to make the score 16-14. Virginia's Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) defeated Larry Ozowara by the score of 1-0 at 184, Andy DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) defeated Ian Bork by the count of 3-1 at 197 and Etu pinned Shawn Ritzenthaler just :27 into the bout in the heavyweight class to close out the match to give the Cavaliers a 28-14 victory.

Following competition in the 2003 Lone Star Duals, Virginia's record is 1-3 overall, 0-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, January 8th when Virginia travels to Richmond, Va. to face the VMI Keydets in a non-conference dual match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM and will take place in Jacobs Gym at the Collegiate School.
