CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team won the 2005 Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships (VISWC) which was held at UVa's Memorial Gymnasium. Virginia recorded 114.5 team points and had four individual champions to pace the Cavaliers to their ninth title in the state meet. UVa has now won three of the last five VISWC titles after also winning the event in 2001 and 2003. UVa head wrestling coach Lenny Bernstein was named the 2005 Virginia State Coach of the Year and Old Dominion's 125-pounder Christian Staylor was named the 2005 VISWC's Outstanding Wrestler.

Virginia edged second place finisher Old Dominion which posted 97.5 points in the event. George Mason placed third with 72.0 points, while VMI tallied 65.5 points to take fourth place and James Madison managed 34.5 points to claim fifth place. The Apprentice School finished in sixth place with 15.0 points to round out the team finishes.

UVa will return to action on January 14-15 when the Cavaliers travel to Hampton, Va. to compete in the 2005 Virginia Duals. The event will take place at the Hampton Coliseum.
