Cavaliers Drop Pair Of Duals On Day One Of Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The Virginia (2-5) wrestling team dropped a pair of contests on Friday (Jan. 12) as the Cavaliers opened day one of competition at the Virginia Duals. The two-day event is being hosted at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va.

Competition will continue on Saturday with Virginia wrestling Fresno State at 10 a.m.  

Virginia dropped its first dual of the day to Iowa State (2-5) in a tight contest that came down to the final weight class. The Cyclones grabbed the victory by a score of 21-18, taking the final points in a back-and-forth dual.

The Cavaliers got wins from No. 13 Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) at 125 pounds and No. 3 Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) at 133 pounds to take the early lead. Iowa State then grabbed the next three weight classes before Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) would win at 165 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively. The win by Schany moved Virginia back in the front of the Cyclones in the overall score.

Iowa State would win at 184 pounds before Jay Aiello (Chantilly, Va.) would win at 197 pounds to tie the dual score at 18 with one weight class remaining. The Cyclones grabbed the win at heavyweight with a slim 3-2 victory to take the dual match.

The 10th-ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State (5-2) took the Cavaliers’ second match of the day, defeating Virginia by a score of 35-3. The Cavaliers got a win from Tyler Love (Clifton, Va.) at heavyweight as he picked up a 6-3 decision to get Virginia on the board.
