HAMPTON, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team finished 1-2 at the 2001 Virginia Duals. The Cavaliers dropped a 29-6 dual match to Central Michigan before defeating James Madison by the score of 19-14. UVa lost a 32-6 dual match to Rider in its third match of the tournament.
In Virginia's match with Central Michigan, UVa's Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) and Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) each posted wins for the Cavaliers. Carlo-Clauss recorded a 3-2 victory over CMU's Barry at 157 lbs. and Massey defeated the Chippewas' Pangborn by the score of 4-1 at 184 lbs. to post Virginia's only two victories in the 29-6 loss.
Massey also highlighted Virginia's performances in UVa's 19-14 victory over James Madison after gathering a 13-5 major decision victory over JMU's Gronlie at 184 lbs. Massey was one of six Cavaliers to gather a victory over the Dukes. UVa's Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) defeated JMU's Head by the score of 2-1 at 133 lbs., P.J. Bory (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) defeated the Dukes' Consolyo by the score of 4-0 at 149 lbs, Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) topped Burbaker 8-2 at 165 lbs., Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) defeated Colabella by the score of 6-3 at 197 lbs. and the Cavaliers Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over JMU's Hockman in the heavyweight class.
In UVa's third match of the tournament, Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) defeated Rider's D'agostino by the score of 3-2 in the heavyweight class and MacDonald defeated Daver by the score of 6-4 in the 133 lbs. class to post the Cavaliers' only two wins of the dual in the 32-6 loss.
Virginia is now 3-4 overall (0-0 ACC) in dual match action. The Cavaliers will travel to Fairfax, Va. to compete in the Virginia Intercollegiates on Saturday, January 20th. The event will be held at George Mason University and will run all day.
