NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team finished second with 93.5 points in the 2004 Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships (VISWC) at the ODU Fieldhouse on the campus of Old Dominion University. UVa had four first place finishes (Scott Moore at 141-pounds, Paul Bjorlo at 157-pounds, Tim Foley at 165-pounds and Michael Grogan at 174-pounds), one second place finish (Ryan Stewart at 125-pounds), one third place finish (Scott Smith at 197-pounds) and one fourth place finish (Aaron Martin at 149-pounds). The Cavaliers' Moore was named the Wrestler of the Meet after winning two of his three matches by fall. VMI took first place in the event with 97.5 points to edge Virginia in the team standings.
Virginia received a majority of its team points from the quartet of Moore, Bjorlo, Foley and Grogan after each wrestler claimed first place in their weight class. Moore finished 3-0 at 141-pounds and won two of his matches by fall and one by major decision to improve his record to 30-0 overall, with 21 of his 30 wins coming by fall. He is already tied for fourth all-time for most falls in a career at UVa in just half of a season, and is tied for 10th all-time for most wins in a single season at Virginia. Moore has now taken first place in all six tournaments/invitationals he has competed in this year.
Foley and Bjorlo also went 3-0 in their respective weight classes. Foley won his three matches at 165-pounds in just as impressive fashion with two falls and one major decision himself to improve his record on the year to 18-3 overall, with eight wins coming by fall. Foley's eight falls is currently tied for seventh all-time for most falls in a single season at UVa, and he now has 18 career falls which ranks tied for seventh all-time at Virginia for most falls in a career.
Bjorlo racked up his three wins at 157-pounds with a fall and two decisions to give himself 19 victories this season, including seven by fall. Bjorlo's seven falls this season ranks him tied for tenth all time at UVa for most falls in a single season. Grogan took first place at 174-pounds with a 2-0 record after winning a pair of decisions for his ninth and tenth wins of the year.
Stewart placed second at 125-pounds after splitting a pair of bouts to go 1-1 on the evening. Smith went 3-1 at 197-pounds to take third place including a pair of falls (the first two of his collegiate career) to claim his final two matches, while Martin finished 2-2 at 149-pounds with one major decision victory to place fourth to highlight all of UVa's placewinners.
Other Cavaliers that posted wins included Drew Michelotti (2-2) at 165-pounds, Chet Naylor (1-2) at 141-pounds, Paul Dunstan (1-2) at 157-pounds and Andrew Leffler (1-2) at heavyweight. Paul Bowman competed at 149-pounds and went 0-2.
In all, Virginia had 12 wrestlers compete in the 2004 VISWC, with over half of them (seven wrestlers) earning placewinners points for the Cavaliers.
Virginia will return to action on Saturday, January 24th when UVa begins the home portion of its 2003-04 schedule by hosting a Tri-Meet with the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Davidson Wildcats. Virginia will face North Carolina in an ACC dual match at 1:00 PM before meeting Davidson in a dual match at 4:30 PM. UNC and Davidson are scheduled to meet in a dual match in between UVa's matches with the Tar Heels and the Wildcats. The event is scheduled to take place at Virginia's Memorial Gymnasium.
