CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team finished second with 84.5 points in the 2002 Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships (VISWC) at Memorial Gymnasium. UVa, the host school of the event, joined the tournament field of: the Apprentice School, George Mason, James Madison, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech and the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).

The seven schools battled in a tournament format to decide the 2002 state championship wrestling team of Virginia. The Virginia Tech Hokies took first place in the tournament with 100 points. VT head coach Keith Mourlam won Coach of the Year honors and the Hokies' Sean Gray (141 lbs.) was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

VMI finished third in the tournament with 73 points, followed by Old Dominion in fourth place with 61.5 points, James Madison in fifth place with 58 points and George Mason in sixth place with 47 points. Apprentice rounded out the field in seventh place with 14.5 points.

The Cavaliers' Paul Dunstan (Oberlin, Ohio/St. Edwards) and Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) won their respective weight classes to highlight UVa's individual finishes in the meet. Dunstan, a true-freshman, went 3-0 at 149 and defeated #1 seed Adrian Austin (GMU) and #2 seed Mike Parson (VMI) en route to the 149 title. Etu, the #1 seed, finished 4-0 in the heavyweight class to claim the heavyweight championship title.

Virginia's trio of Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional), Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) each finished runner-up after falling in the championships bout of their weight classes. Alexander, in his return from a recent injury, finished 2-1 at 133. Foley went 2-1 at 157 and Massey finished 2-1 at 184. The three Cavaliers each recorded a second place finish in their weight classes for UVa.

The Cavaliers had five individuals place third in their respective weight classes after winning the consolation brackets of their class. Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) finished 3-1 at 157, Matt Gallagher (Herndon, Va./Herdon) went 4-1 at 165, Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) finished 3-1 at 174, Andrew DeMartino (McLean, Va./Jefferson) went 3-1 at 197 and Ryan Painter (Rainelle, W.V./Rainelle) finished 3-1 in the heavyweight class.

UVa's Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) marked the 11th Cavalier to place in the meet after he took fourth place with a 2-2 record at 165.

Virginia will return to action on Saturday, January 27th when the Cavaliers travel to Morgantown, W.V. to face the West Virginia Mountaineers in a dual meet. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the WVU Coliseum.
