CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Virginia wrestling team dropped a 25-12 decision to the North Carolina Tar Heels in an Atlantic Coast Conference dual match at UNC's Carmichael Auditorium. UVa won three of the ten bouts on the evening and trailed only 15-12 with three matches to go, but the Tar Heels pulled out a 13-point victory over the Cavaliers by claiming the final three bouts. Virginia's loss to North Carolina was its second loss against UNC in the span of a week. The Tar Heels also defeated the Cavaliers 25-9 last Friday on January 14th at the 25th Annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.
North Carolina (3-2, 2-0 ACC) jumped out to a 15-0 lead over Virginia (3-6, 0-2 ACC) by winning the first four bouts of the dual. The Tar Heels' Bobby Shaw opened the match with a 7-5 win over UVa's Anthony Burke at 125-pounds, and Virginia forfeited at 133-pounds to give the Tar Heels a 9-0 advantage. UNC's Isaiah Britton then pushed the Tar Heels' lead to 12-0 with a 7-2 win over Virginia's Aaron Martin at 141-pounds after three bouts.
North Carolina's Chris Ramos posted the fourth consecutive win for UNC in an exciting bout at 149-pounds against UVa's Paul Dunstan. After trailing Dunstan 1-0 entering the final period, Ramos sent the match into overtime with an escape. He then scored five points in overtime with a takedown and a near fall for a 6-1 victory.
However, Virginia won the next three bouts to trim the Tar Heels' lead to 15-12. After decisions by UVa's Paul Bjorlo at 157-pounds and Will Durkee at 165-pounds, the Cavaliers' Rocco Caponi pinned North Carolina's Alex Maciag in 2:16 at 174-pounds, cutting UNC's advantage to just three points with three bouts to go.
But North Carolina's Justin Dobies got the Tar Heels back on track with a 3-0 victory at 184-pounds and UNC's David Dashiell all but wrapped up the match for North Carolina with a 14-5 major decision win over
Scott Smith at 197-pounds to make the team score 22-12. The Tar Heels' heavyweight Spencer Nadolsky closed out the match with a 3-2 win over the Cavaliers'
Nick Smith to give UNC the 25-12 victory over UVa.
The Cavaliers will return to action on January 29-30 when UVa travels to the state of Ohio to compete in three non-conference dual matches. Virginia will first meet the Kent State Golden Flashes on Saturday, January 29 in Kent, Ohio at noon. UVa will then face both the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday, January 30th in Columbus, Ohio at Ohio State University at noon and 2:00 PM.
