CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team lost its first Atlantic Coast Conference dual match of the season to the N.C. State Wolfpack by the score of 23-10. N.C. State won seven of the ten weight classes, including seven of the first nine matches, to pull away for the 13 point victory at UVa's Memorial Gymnasium.

The Wolfpack's Dustin Kawa opened the dual match with a 10-4 victory over Virginia's Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River N.) at 174 pounds to give NCSU an early 3-0 lead. UVa took its only lead of the dual match at 4-3 after Jimi Massey (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) posted an 11-2 major decision victory over the Wolfpack's Jason Gore at 184 lbs. But N.C. State answered Massey's finish by winning the next three matches.

NCSU's Zach Breitenbach cruised to a 17-1 technical fall victory over UVa's Zach Freday (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) at 197 lbs. to give the Wolfpack an 8-4 lead. N.C. State would not relinquish its lead and pulled out to a 14-4 advantage after Ricky Fowler and George Cintron posted back-to-back victories. Fowler earned a hard-fought 3-2 overtime decision over Virginia's Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) in the heavyweight class and Cintron posted a 9-4 decision over UVa's Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) at 125 lbs.

The Cavaliers' Toby MacDonald (Venice, Fla./Venice) pulled UVa within seven team points of NCSU at 14-7 after he earned a 3-2 decision over Ryan McCallum at 133 lbs. However, the Wolfpack went on to win three of the last four bouts in the dual.

N.C. State won three consecutive matches beginning with Oraefo Brown's 3-2 victory over Virginia's Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) at 141 lbs. The victory increased the Wolfpack's lead to 17-7. N.C. State's Tommy Davis posted a 16-5 major decision victory over UVa's Ernesto Vera (Chesapeake, Va./Lake Taylor) at 149 lbs. to make it a 21-7 NCSU lead before Pierre Pryor gathered a 7-6 victory over the Cavaliers' Don Carlo-Clauss (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) at 157 lbs. to make it a 24-7 contest. However, N.C. State was deducted one team point after Pryor was charged with an unsportsmanlike conduct call, then making the score 23-10.

Virginia's Greg Francesca (Union, N.J./Blair Academy) won the last match of the dual by upsetting N.C. State's Scott Garren by the score of 12-7 at 165 lbs. to pull UVa within 13 points of the Wolfpack at 23-10.

With the loss, Virginia's record falls to 3-5 overall, 0-1 in the ACC. The victory improves N.C. State's record to 6-6 overall, 2-1 in the conference.
