CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team hosted a quad meet with the Kent State Golden Flashes, the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Old Dominion Monarchs at UVa's Memorial Gymnasium. Each team faced the other three opponents in the event. Kent State went a perfect 3-0 after defeating Virginia Tech 27-12, Virginia 29-10 and Old Dominion 32-11. UVa finished 2-1 and defeated ODU 25-14 and VT 31-8, while Virginia Tech went 1-2 after defeating Old Dominion 29-12. ODU went winless after going 0-3 in the competition.

In the first session of dual matches, Virginia won six out the ten bouts against Old Dominion en route to posting a 25-14 victory in Dual I. The Cavaliers recorded three consecutive wins to build a 12-0 lead to open the match and never looked back. UVa's ranked duo of #2 Scott Moore (141-pounds) and #10 Tim Foley (165-pounds) each recorded a fall in the dual. In Dual 2, Kent State defeated Virginia Tech 27-12 after winning eight of the ten bouts in the match. After the Golden Flashes and Hokies split the first pair of bouts, KSU went on to claim seven of the last eight weight classes to cruise to a 15-point win. Kent State's trio of #19 ranked Mike Tolar (157-pounds), 125-pounder Drew Opfer and 141-pounder Nate Daugherty each posted a major decision win for the Golden Flashes. Both of the Hokies' two victories were by fall by after VT's ranked duo of #10 David Hoffman (133-pounds) and #18 Chris Stith (165-pounds) pinned their opponents.

In the second session of dual matches, Kent State defeated Virginia 29-10 after the Golden Flashes won eight of ten bouts against the Cavaliers in Dual III. KSU's 184-pounder Alex Camargo highlighted Kent State's victory after posting a fall at 1:26 over the Cavaliers' Drew Michelotti, while UVa's Foley posted a 11-1 major decision win over KSU's Nick Brenner at 165-pounds to highlight UVa. In Dual IV, Virginia Tech defeated Old Dominion 29-12 with the Hokies claiming wins in six of the ten bouts. VT won five of the first eight matches to pull out to a comfortable lead it would not relinquish. Virginia Tech's duo of 149-pounder Reed Carpenter and Stith each recorded a win by fall, while the Hokies' Ryan Broughman (125-pounds) and Hoffman each posted a pair of major decision victories.

 

 

In the third session of dual matches, Virginia defeated Virginia Tech 31-8 in Dual V. The Cavaliers won seven of the ten bouts, including the first three consecutive matches, and rolled to a 23-point win over the Hokies. Virginia built a commanding 19-5 lead with three matches remaining before staking claim to two of the final three bouts. UVa's Moore recorded his second fall and third victory of the afternoon to improve his record to 35-0 overall with an NCAA leading 25 wins coming by fall. UVa's 149-pounder Aaron Martin also recorded a fall over VT's Carpenter to post his first collegiate fall. In Dual VI, Kent State pulled away for a 32-11 win over Old Dominion. After both teams split the first six matches by claiming three wins apiece, the Golden Flashes turned a close 13-11 dual into a 21-point victory after winning the last four bouts of the match to put the dual out of reach. Kent State's Daugherty pinned ODU's Jason Earnhardt at 3:13 at 141-pounds and 125-pounder Drew Opfer racked up an 18-0 technical fall victory to highlight KSU's win.

By going 2-1 in competition today, Virginia's record improves to 5-3 overall in dual matches this season. The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, February 7th when UVa travels to Pennsylvania to compete in a pair of non-conference dual matches. Virginia will face Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. at 1:00 PM before facing Drexel in Philadelphia, Pa. at 7:00 PM.
