Feb. 16, 2018

PITTSBURGH – The ACC dual season came to a close for the Cavaliers on Friday night as Virginia (4-10, 0-5 ACC) dropped its dual match at Pittsburgh (4-10, 2-3 ACC) by a score of 28-9 at the Petersen Events Center.

The match closed out the dual season for Virginia who will next compete as a team at the ACC Championships on Saturday, March 3. The ACC Championships are hosted by North Carolina this season.

Some members of the squad will compete next weekend at the National Collegiate Open in Dover, Del. That competition will begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25.

The dual at Pittsburgh began at heavyweight with the Panthers picking up the win by major decision.

Virginia then got on the board with a win at 125 pounds from No. 15 Louie Hayes (Orland Park, Ill.) as the lineup flipped back to the lightweights. Hayes posted a 5-1 decision over L.J. Bentley, getting a takedown and two near fall points in sudden victory overtime to get the Cavaliers three points in the dual score.

Pittsburgh would then rattle off wins at the next four weight classes, including a tech fall and a pin fall, to build the lead over the Cavaliers.

Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) and Will Schany (Blair, Neb.) then picked up back-to-back wins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds. The two wins by decision got Virginia to nine points in the overall dual score.

Pittsburgh would then close out the dual with wins at 184 pounds and 197 pounds to close out the dual.
