ST. LOUIS, Mo. - University of Virginia wrestler Steve Garland lost 7-3 to Jeremy Hunter of Penn State in the championship match at 125 pounds on Saturday (March 18) at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

Garland earned All-America honors with his second place finish. His finish ties for the highest ever by a Virginia wrestler at the NCAA Championships. UVa's Henry Jordan finished second in the heavyweight competition in 1957.

A graduate student from Middletown, N.Y., Garland was seeded eighth at 125 pounds and Hunter was seeded second. Garland defeated top-seeded Jody Strittmatter of the University of Iowa in the quarterfinals and beat T.J. Hill of Cal State Fullerton in the semifinals on Friday (March 17).

Garland finished the season with an overall record of 30-5.
