Cavaliers Wrestlers Advance in NCAA Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Penn. - Virginia's Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland) and Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) both won their first round matches in the 1999 NCAA Wrestling Championships and then fell in the second round in action. They will continue in the NCAA tournament on Friday morning.

Roth, seeded seventh, defeated Steve Doerner of Illinois 9-0 and then fell to the ninth seed, Pat Cassidy of Indiana, 6-3. Harshaw, the 11th seed, defeated Sean Morgan of Oregon 4-3 and then fell to Mark Samples of Edinboro 7-5. He will wrestle the winner of the match between Matt Demers of Fresno State and Chris Snyder of Central Michigan on Friday morning. Harshaw now has 99 career wins and stands in third place all-time at Virginia. His two matches today place him fourth overall in total matches with 134 (99-35).

Craig Fenstermaker (Hilton Head, S.C./Northampton (Pa.)) won his pigtail match over Justin Woodruff of Navy and then fell in the first round to Damien Craighton of Drexel 2-0. He defeated Elliott Williams of James Madison 3-0 in the second round of consolations to wrestle eighth-ranked Tony Wieland of Northern Iowa tomorrow morning.

John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College), wrestling in his hometown, lost his pigtail match to George Carter of Bloomsburg but came back to defeat Stan Spoor of Clarion 4-1 in the first round of consolations. He then fell to Jeff Bucher of Ohio State 15-7 in the second round to conclude his season.

Action continues tomorrow morning at Penn State at 11:00 am.
