LEXINGTON, Va. - Eight first-year members of the University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 2002 Keydet Invitational at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Three Cavaliers, Dan Clark (West Creek, N.J./Southern Regional), Drew Michelotti (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams) and Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem), placed in the top three spots of their respective weight classes in their first collegiate action in their UVa careers.

Virginia's Clark won the 197 lbs. class after posting a 2-0 record in the class. He won the 197 class in convicing fashion after pinning both of his opponents. Clark pinned Old Dominion's John Dolida at 2:44 before pinning Washington & Lee's Michael Bennett at :50 to gather the 197 title. The Cavaliers' Michelotti (165 lbs.) and Sticca (125 lbs.) each took third place in their respective weight classes. Michelotti finished 3-1 at 165 after reeling off three consecutive wins after losing his first match of the event. Michelotti defeated The Citadel's James Rose by the score of 11-8 to finish third. Sticca also finished 3-1 and won his last two matches after splitting his first pair of bouts. Sticca posted a 10-1 major decision victory over Davidson's Patrick Coman to take third at 125. All three of Sticca's victories were by a major decision.

Virginia's Chet Naylor (Dallastown, Pa./Dallastown) took fourth place at 133 lbs. after racking up a 3-2 record in the class. Naylor won his first two matches, including a fall over Washington & Lee's Grant Krapf at 1:06, but dropped a hard-fought 6-5 decision in the third place match to The Citadel's Ivan Enriquez. Teammate Ian DeRath (Forest, Va./Lowell) went 1-2 at 133 and posted his first collegiate fall after pinning Duke's Brandon Ayers at 1:47. UVa's Conor Manley (Wilron, Conn./Wilron) went 1-2 at 157 and picked up his first collegiate victory by defeating Davidson's Adam Spelling by the score of 8-6.

The Cavaliers' Joey Carpenter (Oakton, Va./Paul VI) and Ram McDonnell (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) also competed at 133 and 174, respectively. Both wrestlers finished 0-2 in their weight classes.
