CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 14 Virginia wrestling team captured two of its three matches Sunday at the Hokie Duals, held at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, Va. Virginia (5-1) earned wins over VMI (42-3) and Kent State (29-12), while suffering a narrow defeat to No. 20 Wisconsin (19-17).

Joe Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) had a big day for Virginia with three wins at 141 pounds, including two over top-20 opponents. After earning a technical fall in his first match against VMI, Spisak scored a 6-2 win over No. 10 Jess Thielke of Wisconsin and rallied for a 12-10 win over No. 16 Tyler Small of Kent State.

Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) and Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) also swept their three matches in decisive fashion at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. Both wrestlers piled up bonus points in all of their matches; Sulzer recorded a pin, tech fall and major decision, while Doty picked up a pair of pins and one win by forfeit.

"I'm really proud of the way our guys rebounded after such a close loss to Wisconsin but make no mistake, we have a lot to work on," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "Joe Spisak and Blaise Butler made the weekend memorable and Ethan Hayes being right there with a top-ranked wrestler was encouraging as well."

In the first match of the day, Virginia won nine of its 10 bouts against VMI (0-3), with eight Cavaliers scoring bonus points.

UVa held a 17-10 lead against Wisconsin (4-1) before the Badgers rallied for the team win by taking the final three weight classes. The Cavaliers won five straight weights from Spisak's upset win at 141 through Doty's victory by forfeit at 174. The dual went down to the final weight class, where sixth-ranked Connor Medbery held off the Cavaliers' Ethan Hayes (R-So., New Lebanon, Ohio), 6-5, in the heavyweight bout.

The Cavaliers ended the day by winning the first seven bouts and eight in all in cruising to the win over Kent State (0-3). Blaise Butler (R-So., Belvidere, Ill.) scored an 8-5 win over 11th-ranked Ian Miller at 157 pounds.

Virginia is next in action on Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Cavaliers battle No. 8 Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. UVa will hold a youth clinic from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the match.
