CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 2002 Sharpie-Carolina Wrestling Open at the University of North Carolina's Carmichael Auditorium. The Cavaliers were lead by the trio of Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) and Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall). Foley won the 157-pound class title after winning his first two matches by fall en route to finishing 5-0 in the event to become the only UVa wrestling to claim an individual title. Etu and Seidel each placed second in their respective weight classes. Etu finished 4-1 in the heavyweight class before falling in overtime in the heavyweight finals and Seidel won his first three consecutive bouts by fall to finish 3-1 in the 141-pound class as runner-up.

The Cavaliers had a total of 16 individuals compete in the 2002 Sharpie-Carolina Wrestling Open, and half of them placed in their respective weight classes. Eight wrestlers (including Foley, Etu and Seidel) place in the top six spots of their weight classes for Virginia. There we no team scores kept in the competition.

UVa's Joe Alexander (Franklin, N.J./Delsea Regional) bounced back from an early-season illness and finished third at 133-pounds with a 3-1 record. It was Alexander's first collegiate competition since winning the ACC Championship last season. Virginia's duo of Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) and Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) each placed fifth in their respective weight classes. Bjorlo finished 5-1 at 149-pounds and Sticca went 4-1 at 125-pounds. The Cavaliers' Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) placed sixth at 174-pound with a 4-2 record. UVa's Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) also advanced to the third place consolation bracket by going 3-2 at 165-pounds and took fourth place in the class.

The Cavaliers' Ryan Stewart (Dumfries, Va./Potomac), Scott Mania (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) and Ram McDonnell (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) also recorded victories in the event. Stewart and Mania finished 3-2 at 125-pounds and 184-pounds respectively, while McDonnell went 1-2 in the 174-pound class.

Virginia will return to action on Thursday, December 5th when UVa travels to Harrisonburg, Va. to face the James Madison Dukes in the Cavaliers' first dual match of the season. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
