Cavaliers Drop Meet to Tar Heels, 18-12

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia took a 13-6 lead after Alex Leykikh (West Hartford, CT/Hall) defeated Jamie Groudle 8-6 at 158 pounds, but the Tar Heels won the last four bouts to defeat the Cavaliers 18-12. The Carolina win extended their streak against the Cavaliers to 23 consecutive matches over 24 years.

The Cavaliers got on the board as Matt Roth (Wescosville, Pa./Parkland) defeated C. C. Fisher 4-1 at 126 pounds to tie the match at 3-3. Virginia moved ahead 7-3 as Jason Mutarelli (N. Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) scored a major decision over Josh Cowley 11-2. Carolina pulled within one at 7-6 as John Mark Bentley defeated John Pozniak (State College, Pa./State College) 8-6. Jim Harshaw (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) gave the Cavaliers a four-point cushion with a 7-1 defeat of Robert Lord at 150-pounds.

After Leykikhs win at 158, the Tar Heels won at 167 as Tom Bogan defeated John Qualter (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) 3-1 behind two penalty points for Bogan as Qualter was called for stalling. Scott Reese (Annandale, VA/Annandale) lost a close bout to Corey Bell 4-1 at 177.

In the 190-pound bout, which featured #7 Scott Stay against #16 Martius Harding (Baltimore, Md./McDonough), Harding had an 9-8 lead in the final period but Stay took him down with 30 seconds on the clock for the win as the Tar Heels went ahead 15-13. A team point deduction for the Cavliers for unsportsmanlike conduct was assessed, which dropped the score to 15-12. Joe Hummels defeat of Jason Majestic (Patchogue, NY/Medford) put the final score at 18-12 in favor of the Tar Heels.

The Cavaliers continue their dual match season tomorrow as they face the Hokie s of Virginia Tech and the Bulldogs of the Citradel. The match against the Hokies will begin at 2:00 pm and the Bulldogs and the Hoos will tangle at 5:00 pm.
