CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. The Virginia wrestling team lost a narrow 19-15 decision to No. 24 Kent State Saturday morning at the Virginia Duals in Hampton. The Cavaliers wrap up the duals with a 1-2 record after defeating Clarion (28-9) and falling to Navy (20-15) on Friday.

Matt Bonson (Fr., Lewistown, Pa.), 10th-ranked Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) and 19th-ranked Brent Jones (Jr., Burke, Va.) each won for the Cavaliers to finish 3-0 at the Virginia Duals. Bonson recorded an upset of 11th-ranked Dan Mitcheff at 133 pounds, while Nick Nelson (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) followed with a victory over No. 13 Drew Lashaway at 141 pounds.

Virginia (5-6) won five of the nine contested bouts, but again started in a 6-0 hole after forfeiting the 125-pound class because of injuries to Ross Gitomer (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) and Joe Trause (Fr., Carlstadt, N.J.). The match was tight throughout, as eight of the nine bouts were decided by decisions, including five by three points or fewer.

After giving up the forfeit points to open the match, Virginia quickly rallied to knot the score at six, thanks to Bonson’s 10-7 win over Mitcheff and Nelson’s 7-2 victory over Lashaway. The teams then alternated wins through the final seven bouts, with KSU scoring the deciding victory at heavyweight with fifth-ranked Jermail Porter outlasting Virginia’s Calvin Cardillo (Jr., Alexandria, Va.).

No. 20 Jedd Moore (Fr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) knocked off Ross Tice, 6-5, at 157 pounds to improve to 19-8 this year. No. 10 Chris Henrich (So., Lansdale, Pa.) continued his blistering start with a 5-4 decision over Chris Estep as he pushed his record to 23-1, and Brent Jones (Jr., Burke, Va.) moved to 17-4 with a 10-4 victory over Eric Chine at 197.

Virginia is back on the mat next weekend, as it kicks off its home schedule at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers will play host to a three-team round robin Saturday with UNC Greensboro and Rutgers. The Spartans and Scarlet Knights will square off at 11 a.m., followed by Virginia against UNCG at 1 p.m. The Cavaliers and Scarlet Knights then wrestle at 3 p.m. Sunday, Virginia matches up with Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
