CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Virginia wrestling team will compete in an Atlantic Coast Conference dual match against the North Carolina Tear Heels on Friday, January 21st at 7:00 PM at UNC's Carmichael Auditorium. Virginia (3-5, 0-1 ACC) will be meeting North Carolina (2-2, 1-0 ACC) for the second time in a week. UVa dropped a 25-9 decision to UNC on January 14th in a non-conference dual match at the 25th Annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. at the Hampton Coliseum.
The Cavaliers will try to snap their current three-match losing streak in dual match action on Friday. Virginia started the season off with back-to-back wins over Appalachian State (25-21) and Findlay (35-6) before falling to #19 Edinboro (26-6). UVa then dropped a 32-0 decision to Virginia Tech before rebounding with a 25-13 victory over VMI. The Cavaliers then lost three consecutive matches at the Virginia Duals after falling to Ohio (18-15), North Carolina (25-9) and North Dakota State (27-12).
Virginia trails the all-time series history with North Carolina 24-38. However, the Cavaliers have defeated the Tar Heels in the last two ACC meetings between Virginia and North Carolina. UVa defeated UNC by the score of 24-20 last year on January 24, 2004 in Charlottesville and also topped North Carolina by the score of 20-17 on January 24, 2003 the last time the Cavaliers were in Chapel Hill, N.C. That victory marked the first time Virginia had defeated North Carolina in 28 years.
