No. 25 Virginia Opens ACC Competition At No. 6 Virginia Tech Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 25 Virginia (8-3, 0-0 ACC) wrestling team opens ACC competition on the road Sunday (Jan. 22), traveling to face No. 6 Virginia Tech (12-1, 2-0 ACC) at 4 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum in the Commonwealth Clash.

The Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529 is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech.  The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 22 individual event points on the line.  The school that accumulates 11.5 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy.  Visit TheCommonwealthClash.com for more information and updated standings.

In its inaugural year (2014-15), the Commonwealth Clash came to a close with Virginia winning 15 to 7.  The Cavaliers won last year (2015-16) 14 to 7.

Virginia currently leads 4.5 to 3.5.

A trio of Cavaliers continue to find themselves among the tops in the nation at their weight class with freshman Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas), senior George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) and junior Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) ranked in the latest rankings.

Cavaliers In The NCAA Statistical Rankings
A pair of Cavaliers found themselves in the top 10 nationally in the initial release of the NCAA Statistical Rankings this week. Senior George DiCamillo entered the week 10th nationally in pins with 7 to date in 17:12. Jack Mueller topped the national statistics for tech falls entering the week, holding nine to date in 33:47.

Up Next For Virginia
The Cavaliers will return home next weekend to continue ACC competition against No. 7 NC State. The dual match is set for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday (Jan. 29) at Memorial Gym. Admission to all Virginia home wrestling matches is free.
