CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia wrestler Steve Garland (Middleton, N.Y./Middleton) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Year in a vote conducted by the five league coaches. Garland, who wrestled at 125 pounds this season, finished the year with a record 30-5 overall, 10-1 in dual match action. He ended his wrestling career at UVa with an overall mark of 91-36, 28-12 in dual match competition.
Garland finished the 1999-2000 season by advancing all the way to the 125 championship match at the 2000 NCAA Wrestling Championships at St. Louis, Missouri. There, he fell to eventual champion Jeremy Hunter of Penn State by the narrow score of 7-3 in the 125-lbs finals.
A tri-captain of the UVa wrestling team, Garland finished the year ranked eighth in the country by Intermat Rankings. He recorded seven victories by major decision, six wins by technical fall and four matches by fall in 1999-2000.
Garland's top finishes in tournament action this season occurred when he took first place at both the Keystone Classic (4-0) and at the Virginia State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championship (4-0). He also finished runner-up at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational, the American University Congressional Cup, the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Championships this season.
Garland became the first Cavalier selected to compete in the National Wrestling Coaching Association All-Star Classic, which he competed in on February 7th in East Lansing, Michigan. He also became the fourth Virginia wrestler to earn All-American honors in the last decade after finishing runner-up at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
