CHARLOTTESVILLE - Seventeen members of the Virginia wrestling team competed at the 2007 University National Freestyle Championships last weekend in Akron, Ohio. Eric Albright (York, Pa.) and Brent Jones (Burke, Va.) each posted solid finishes of third and seventh, respectively, in their weight classes, while several young Cavalier wrestlers stepped up and produced impressive results.
"This weekend was a huge stepping stone for our program," Virginia head coach Steve Garland said. "We had, by far, the most entries at the tournament, and I think at the very least this shows our young kids' commitment to getting better. We always tell our guys that the best way to improve is to go to the best competitions. We did this, and I am very proud of the way our kids wrestled. I think Brent Jones and Eric Albright in particular showed how good they are on the national level. People should watch out for them next year."
Albright produced the best finish of the weekend for Virginia, taking third place in the 138.75-pound weight class. He won five matches en route to the third-place finish. Albright's lone loss came on a pin to Penn State All-American and eventual class champion Jake Strayer.
Jones also won five matches en route to a seventh-place finish in the 211.5-pound class. Jones' first loss came after having three-time All-American and NCAA finalist Phil Davis of Penn State down 4-0 before getting caught and pinned.
"People were lining up around the mat to watch this one," Garland said. "Brent hit some insane moves in the first period on Davis. He is going to be a stud for us next year."
Mike Grogan (North Canton, Ohio) also had some quality wins in the 185-pound class and avenged a regular-season loss to Buffalo's Nate Rock in the first round. He also defeated Iowa's Rick Loera in a comeback win.
Kellon Balum (Herndon, Pa.) had a solid tournament at 145.5, recording a 4-2 mark and defeating former junior national runner-up Willie Saxton of Missouri and NCAA qualifier Vince Castillo in the process. He also had a tough loss to Iowa's Dan Leclere in the final seconds.
