CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Virginia head wrestling coach Lenny Bernstein has announced his program's 2003-2004 schedule. The Cavaliers' schedule is lined with strong non-conference opponents, prestigious tournament and invitational action, and as always, a rigorous Atlantic Coast Conference slate. In all, UVa has 29 scheduled appearances on its 2003-2004 schedule, including 11 date-events which are scheduled to take place in Charlottesville.
Virginia will kick-off its 2003-2004 schedule with the annual Blue-Orange Exhibition match on November 2nd at the newly refurbished Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers will begin the regular season portion of their schedule on November 8-9 when UVa travels to East Lansing, Mich. to compete in the Michigan State Open. Virginia's next stop will be in Ithaca, N.Y. to compete in Cornell University's Body Bar Invitational on November 22nd. The Cavaliers will then head to Lock Haven, Pa. to compete in the Mat Town Invitational on November 29th before heading into their finals break.
UVa will resume action on December 19th when it travels to Newark, Del. to compete in the second annual Collegiate Beast of the East Invitational at the University of Delaware. Virginia will also begin action in the Southern Scuffle at UNC-Greensboro on December 28-29 in Greensboro, N.C. while select Cavaliers will head to Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. to compete in the prestigious Midlands Invitational on December 29-30.
UVa will compete in its first dual match of the season on January 7th, when the Cavaliers head to Richmond, Va. to face the VMI Keydets at St. Christopher's School. Virginia will continue dual match action when it travels to Hampton, Va. on January 9-10 to compete in the 2004 Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. The Cavaliers will then return to tournament action on January 18th when UVa competes in the Virginia Intercollegiate State Wrestling Championship in Norfolk, Va. at Old Dominion University.
The Cavaliers will begin the home portion on their schedule on January 24th when UVa hosts a pair of dual matches. Virginia will face North Carolina in the ACC dual match before meeting Davidson later that afternoon. The following week on January 31st, UVa will host a quad meet and will face Kent State, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion in the event.
The Cavaliers will then hit the road for a brief stretch beginning with a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. and Philadelphia, Pa. on February 7th to meet Lehigh and Drexel, respectively, in a pair of dual matches. The following day, UVa will head to Fairfax, Va. to face George Mason in a dual match on February 8th. A week later, Virginia will head to Raleigh, N.C. on February 14th for a match against ACC foe N.C. State before making the short journey to Durham, N.C. later that day to face Duke in another ACC dual match.
The Cavaliers will return to home action to close out the season beginning with a final conference dual match with Maryland on February 19th. Virginia will then close out the regular season portion of its schedule on February 21st by hosting another quad meet, this time against Cornell, James Madison and The Citadel.
UVa will host the ACC Wrestling Championship in conjunction with the Southern Conference Championship on March 6th in University Hall. After competition in the ACC Tournament, select Cavaliers will compete in the NCAA Championships on March 18-20 in Saint Louis, Missouri.
