No. 22 Virginia Opens 2013-14 Season Saturday with Home Quad Meet

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia wrestling team begins its 2013-14 season Saturday when it plays host to a quad meet at Memorial Gymnasium. Ranked 22nd in the preseason InterMat poll, the Cavaliers will face Anderson (S.C.) at 10 a.m., Gardner-Webb at noon and West Virginia at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Fans can park free of charge in the Culbreth Road Garage. Because of the football game Saturday, there will be a fee to park in the Central Grounds Garage and the Emmet/Ivy Garage.

Virginia returns six starters from its 2012-13 team and also has 2012 NCAA qualifier Gus Sako (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) back in the 149-pound weight class after his redshirt season last year. All-American Nick Sulzer (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) anchors the Cavaliers' lineup at 165 pounds; he took eighth place last year at the NCAA Championships en route to All-America honors.

In all, UVa has six NCAA qualifiers back in the mix. George DiCamillo (So., Highland Heights, Ohio), Joe Spisak (R-Jr., Boiling Springs, Pa.), Stephen Doty (R-Sr., St. Louis, Mo.) and Derek Papagianopoulos (R-Jr., Burlington, Mass.) all return this year. DiCamillo (133) and Spisak (141) each were NCAA qualifiers last year, as were Doty and Fausey. Doty moves back to 174 pounds this year, while Fausey is going back up to 184 after spending a year at 174.

Six Cavaliers are tabbed in the preseason InterMat rankings - DiCamillo (12th at 133), Spisak (19th at 141), Sako (14th at 149), Sulzer (fifth at 165), Doty (13th at 174) and Fausey (ninth at 184).

Virginia took runner-up honors last year at the ACC Championships before finishing 21st at the NCAA Championships.

UVa heads to Salem, Va., next Sunday (Nov. 10) for the Hokie Duals, where the Cavaliers will face VMI (9 a.m.), No. 8 Wisconsin (11 a.m.) and Kent State (1 p.m.). UVa's next home bout is Sunday, Nov. 24, when the Cavaliers battle No. 19 Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
