RALEIGH, N.C. – Two freshmen placed to lead the Cavaliers in action at the Wolfpack Open on Sunday afternoon as a group of competed in the event.
Cam Coy (Jeanette, Pa.) finished second at 157 pounds, while Sam Book (Fairfax, Va.) finished sixth at 125 pounds. Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.) advanced to the seventh-place match at 149 pounds, but due to new NCAA rules, the match could not be wrestled as both wrestlers had already competed in six matches on the day.
Coy finished second, dropping a 2-1 decision in the championship match at 157 pounds to two-time NCAA qualifier and two-time All-ACC selection Mitch Finesilver of Duke. Book finished sixth with one of his two losses coming to NC State sophomore Tommy Cox and the other coming to Old Dominion freshman Killian Cardinale. Book pinned two wrestlers on the way to the finish.
The six freshmen competing for Virginia combined to post 11 bonus-point victories on the afternoon, including four pins and five wins by technical fall. Quinn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) posted a pair of tech fall wins, while Brian Courtney (Sayre, Pa.) pinned one of his opponents for a win.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday (Nov. 26) when Virginia hosts No. 5 Missouri at 1 p.m. in a dual meet at Memorial Gym.
